This is a procedure where a part of the sigmoid colon is removed and the left colon is anastamosed to the rectum
This is mainly done for cancer of the sigmoid, diverticular disease and large polyps.
In most cases the bowel can be safely anastamosed but in some infected cases of diverticular disease you can end with a temporary or permanent stoma
This procedure in our unit is performed laparoscopically which results in faster recovery and good cosmetic result. Subsequent surgeries if needed in the future become easier compared to open surgery because of less scar tissue
